  • Police officers who have to retire having sustained permanent injuries in the course of duty are entitled to additional special pension benefits, generally referred to as Injury on Duty pensions (IOD pensions), which are provided subject to regulations.

In 2004, the Home Office issued guidance to police forces which amounted to manipulation of the review process which was not supported by the regulations. The guidance was adopted by about half of UK police forces. Pensioners were then involved in a series of actions in the High Court, together with a series of determinations by the Pensions Ombudsman. Eventually the Home Office guidance was declared to be unlawful and withdrawn.

Even after this ignominious failure, there are a number of Police Forces who are still trying to manipulate the regulations to reduce injury pensions and reduce their costs, even though they have had to bear the enormous costs of their failures and the payment of compensation to pensioners.
Pipin has provided information and contact support to IOD pensioners but, as the challenges facing us have become more complex, pensioners have formed the Injury On Duty Pensioners Association (IODPA)  which is better resourced and is dedicated to defending IOD pensions. All IOD pensioners are urged to join IODPA.

  • Pipin continues to furnish important updates and comment. Perusal of our History and News sections tells the story of how pensioners were able to stand and succeed against injustice.

About this website

This web site is operated voluntarily for the benefit of ex police officers affected initially by Home Office Circular 46/2004 and subsequent guidance and policies designed to reduce injury on duty pensions.  Pipin was created after consultation with the All Forces IOD Group which later became ADfPO (The Alliance of Disabled Former Police Officers). In 2015 IODPA was formed and this web site supports IODPA .

Pipin is a network dedicated to assisting ex officers challenge attempts to reduce their Injury on Duty awards. It is a self help resource. It has no financial resources and cannot offer representation or financial support. We recommend membership of IODPA which can advise and initiate contact with the legal team. Many of our members have benefited from the advice of the very successful team of legal representatives.
